Poplar Beach leases won’t be renewed in 2010

Those complaining that there are not enough lake accesses or public beach areas may like the idea of a possible new public area, but those who lease land at Poplar Beach to put their cottages may see it a little different.

Some of those leasing land in the Poplar Beach area from the Township of Huron-Kinloss have been told that their leases will be terminated in 2010.

Council made a resolution to terminate the leases, which were set to expire on Sept 10, 2010 at its Sept. 15 meeting in Ripley.

Administrator Mary Rose Walden was told to take all required actions necessary to terminate the leases and provide notice to the tenants.

Those affected by the termination are Earl Demmerling, Carl and Deborah Mowbray, Rod MacSween, Harvey Emmerton, Martin Walsh, Bruce Bedford, and Paul and Deborah Currie, assigned to Albert and Diane Hayes.

The leases provide that "the tenants shall remove any house, building or structure on the lands on or before Sept. 25, 2010 to the Township's satisfaction.

The resolution states that, “Council hereby resolves that it requires possession of the lands that are subject to the leases for demolition purposes or for conversion to a use other than seasonal residential premises.”

Although council has been considering redeveloping the land into a public beach area, some believe the beach is not suitable for swimming. They say the area would not be appropriate for a public beach. Others however have used the beach regularly in the past, as at times, residents have complained parking has been restricted at Bruce Beach and that the beaches in Point Clark are fouled with algae and sediment from run-off and beach groynes.
