Hail, heavy rains and high winds in Huron-Kinloss

Sunday, June 15, 2008 saw some people in the township looking skyward, especially in Point Clark, where 3/5" to one-inch hail fell, along with about 3-3/4 inches of rain in several hours.

While heavy rain, thunderstorm and hail warnings came from Environment Canada, families enjoying Fathers Day were also keeping an eye on cars, plants and other out door items for damage from the large hail, while others kept an eye out for possible funnel clouds.

Although none were reported to have touched down, torrential rains caused flooded yards and ditches as heavy farm run-off poured into waterways and roadside ditches on its way to the lake.

Attawandaron Road in Point Clark had a temporary river on the north side, as brown water filled the open ditch from a lane way leading up the bluff at the top, (east) end of the street, on Lake Range. After running down Attawandaron, the water poured into Huron Road ditches before finding an outlet into the lake.

While no injuries or serious hail damage was reported, residents with basements saw sump pumps working overtime from the heavy downpours.

Hard hats and rubber boots may be required

Large hail, as seen above, dropped several times in the afternoon of June 15, 2008, some measuring nearly one-inch across, as seen below.

A lane way leading to farm property on top of the bluff on Lake Range in Point Clark was the sight of the beginnings of a brown river, above. The force from the water washed out not only soil from the field, but also the lane way itself, as seen here on Lake Range Road, (below).
