Bruce Power reaches important New Build milestone Environmental Impact Statement studies released for public review Bruce Power marked an important milestone in its Bruce New Build Environmental Assessment (EA) by releasing more than 18 months worth of technical studies for public review and comment. In doing so, the company set a new standard for EA consultation by issuing more than 4,000 pages of Environmental Impact Statement study documents for public comment while the draft EA guidelines are still out for consultation by regulatory authorities. "This is a key milestone in our new build project and tangible evidence of the significant progress we continue to make," said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We began the EA process roughly 18 months ago and this marks what we view as the half-way point of our assessment. By sharing this material with our community today, we are letting people see the thoroughness of our work. More importantly, we are asking for their input yet again as we consider building Ontario's first new reactors in a generation." The release of these documents will also allow Bruce Power to work with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON), through a protocol agreement signed last Friday, to ensure Aboriginal considerations are reflected in the EA. The study documents are available at libraries in Port Elgin, Kincardine, Tiverton, Southampton, Walkerton, Paisley, Hanover and Owen Sound as well as the band offices of the Saugeen First Nation in RR1 Southampton and the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation in RR5 Wiarton. The documents, which will form the basis of Bruce Power's final New Build EA, will also be posted electronically at www.brucepower.com later this week. Bruce Power will hold a series of Open Houses in June to further discuss the material. Open Houses will be held: * June 16, 2008 - Bruce Power Visitors' Centre - 7 p.m. * June 17, 2008 - Best Western Governor's Inn, 791 Durham Street, Kincardine - 7 pm * June 18, 2008 - Colonial Motel, 235 Goderich Street, Port Elgin - 7 pm * June 23, 2008 - Victoria Jubilee Hall, 111 Jackson Street S., Walkerton - 7 pm * June 24, 2008 - Best Western Inn on the Bay, 1800 2nd Avenue E., Owen Sound - 7 pm Bruce Power filed a site license application for new build with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in August, 2006 and began its formal EA in January, 2007, when the commission accepted the company's Project Description. |
