Bad and good news for Lucknow Huron-Kinloss residents received news recently that the Family Y Daycare will stay open in Lucknow, however residents wanting to renew their drivers licenses will have to make a trip to Kincardine or Wingham rather than visit the Ministry of Transportation office on Havelock Street. An open house was held in Kincardine on April 24 at the new Ministry of Transportation Ontario, (MTO) office on Highway 21 between Grey Solid Wood Furniture and the Kincardine Tourism Office. The announcement to close the office in Lucknow was made on April 23, 2008. The MTO at that time gave no reason for the closure. The MTO is now encouraging Huron-Kinloss residents to use the Kincardine office for license plates and license renewals. On the good news side, the Lucknow Family Y Daycare has had a stay of execution after worries that a lack of enrollment could cause the daycare to close its doors. Dennis Morrison, Director of Child Care Services of the Owen Sound Family Y, is responsible for several Bruce County sites. He says enrolment at the Lucknow site has been dropping since it opened two years ago. A recent public meeting was held to find out whether families were using other area daycare centres, such as the Family Y in Ripley and to determine if there was any need for such a service in Lucknow. The cost is said to be a factor, according to Morrison, but he says that financial help is available to those who apply to Bruce County and can afford to time be put on a waiting list. The county can then apply to the provincial government for a subsidy. The number of families on the list would determine that subsidy. Morrison says Lucknow area parents have no need to worry about whether they'll still be able to find and access local childcare. He says Family Y in Lucknow will still remain open and that the organization, Bruce County and members of the community will work towards developing area childcare.
