Walker House celebrates it’s grand opening

An opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 to celebrate the official opening of Walker House, the oldest building in Kincardine and oldest standing hotel in Bruce and Grey Counties.

Rick Clarke, Administrator of the Paddy Walker Heritage Centre praises those who helped in the restoration of the building. “The beautiful restoration of this heritage site by the people of Kincardine, accomplished through thousands of hours of volunteer labour and hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations over 10 years, is a celebration of community spirit, commitment and determination.”

The building was built in 1850, however it was severely damaged by fire in 1995. Clarke says, “Rather than have this historical building demolished, in 1998 the Paddy Walker Heritage Society was formed and a 10-year journey to completely restore the building to its original state began.”

July 30 will officially open the building as the community’s (Kincardine) heritage centre. Exhibits, programs and events will be offered interpreting the history of Kincardine and the surrounding region.

David Forsyth, Senior Curator of the National Museums of Scotland will be on hand for the opening. Clarke says Forsyth will also be around the week of July 27-August 3, 2008 accompanying the Kist Exhibit that is on loan to us from his National Museums of Scotland.

This year also celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Kincardine Scottish Pipers and Drummers.

The opening ceremony is begins at 1:00 p.m. with the actual ribbon cutting to take place at 1:30 p.m. in the garden area on the grounds.

Following the ribbon cutting Walker House will be open for tours and refreshments.
