Children late after bus slides off the road in Huron-Kinloss

After-school pick-up was delayed for about an hour on Jan 23, 2008 for some students at Ripley-Huron Public School as a result of a bus going off the road.

This comes only weeks after a school bus and a passenger vehicle collided on Lake Range Drive in Point Clark.

During the Jan 23 delay, the bus company left messages on parent’s answering machines stating, “there would be a delay.”

The children, traveling from Ripley-Huron Public School on route to Point Clark, were picked up at about 4:00 p.m. The bus is regularly waiting outside the school doors when school is out.

The delay, according to the bus company when contacted by phone at about 4:30 on Jan 23, resulted from the bus “sliding into the ditch.”

The bus company stated that “there were no other buses available” and that they had to “wait for a tow truck,” before picking up the children.

The company gave few other details other than “it was weather related” and “there was nothing wrong with the bus.”

Children arrived home at about 5:00 p.m.

At least one student reported overhearing a two-way radio conversation in the morning in which the driver was reporting poor driving conditions.

Several weeks earlier, police were called to an intersection on Lake Range Drive and Concession 2 in Point Clark after a bus was said to have slid through a stop sign and a collision with a passenger vehicle ensued.

Thankfully, there were no injuries were reported in either incident.
