Highway 86 now an open road

The 18 Mile River Bridge between Amberley and Lucknow ready for traffic.

The Bruce Road 86 bridge opened on May 28, 2008, after about a year of troubles and setbacks.

That’s good news for those who traveled Concession 2, or all the way into Ripley to get to Highway 21.

The bridge saw several setbacks and delays, including one construction foul-up that left six workers injured and put the bridgework behind by an additional sieven-eight months. This left drivers taking back roads through the winter months and caused transport trucks to run on smaller township roads.

The large media outlets made big news of the accident, which happened on Sat, Oct. 10, 2007, months after the work was to be complete. Media falsely reported the incident as a “bridge collapse,” when in reality, concrete forms and scaffolding gave way while pouring the deck of the bridge, injuring workers and causing a major mess in the river.

With the bridge finally paved and ready to go, Bruce County can now begin working on Bruce Road 6 and 7, which goes through Ripley. The township of Huron-Kinloss will be shelling out about $440,000 for its share of the new project for water mains, curbs, etc.

The cause of the accident has not yet been released as the Ministry of Labour has still not released its findings of investigation after six months.
