Rattlesnake sighted on the Maitland Trail

Goderich animal control officer Robert Trick told Goderich council on the January 22 meeting that a Northern Ontario man who had sighted the snake while hiking on the Maitland Trail.

Trick said the man was credible and had previously handled rattlesnakes.

The man tried to shoe the snake off the trail with a branch but the snake came after him. The man then contacted animal control.

Trick searched for the snake on several occasions, but had no luck in locating the snake.

He told council that rattlesnakes are not indigenous to this area of the province and that it was likely someone’s pet.

The Massasauga rattlesnake is the only species of rattlesnake in Ontario, sometimes seen on the Eastern Shore of Georgian Bay, the Bruce Peninsula, along with several other areas.

Trick says he has never heard of a report in the Goderich area.
