Smooth driving in Huron-Kinloss

By Darrell Ziegler

There may be a few more happy drivers in the township with the Lake Range Drive extension needing only some finishing touches, Statter’s Lake Avenue being recently paved, and the hill on Concession 4 leaving Point Clark freshened up.

Public works superintendent Hugh Nichol says the Lake Range Road is still set to be open on Nov. 3 and that the base coat of asphalt was applied this week.

He says, Lavis Contracting was in on Monday, Oct. 23 and got the majority of the base coat laid in one day.

Guardrails, traffic signs and gates still need to be installed, along with finishing touches such as seeding and the planting of coniferous tress.

A stop sign at Concession 12 will be installed for southbound traffic and northbound will stop at Saratoga Road. That would allow traffic to adjust for a 90-degree left turn at Saratoga and a drop in speed from 80 km/h, to 40 km/h.

The final coat of asphalt is to be done next year.

The cost of the extension was about $883,000.

Statter’s Lake Avenue received the badly needed rebuild as well.

Residents in North Kinloss complained to council last year that the road was at times impassible during the spring thaw, as well as when mild spells occurred in the winter.

Nichol then looked into the matter further and discussed possible options with council, resulting in $315,000 being budgeted in 2006 for rebuilding and paving.

Another project completed this week was the re-paving of the hill on Concession 4, leaving Point Clark.

The hill has been in rather poor condition for some time following near-by, underground work.

The hill has now been re-graded and re-paved.
