Kincardine council making some good decisions these days

It seems to me that a hospital and medical clinic in Kincardine is enough for the area and a “Rehabilitation Clinic” to “lure” doctors to the area isn’t necessary.

Doctors are not fools. If they want to set up shop in the area, they will. They do not need a rehab centre to make their minds up. They either want to practice here, or they don’t.

Municipalities aren't in the health care business.

I see one particular media outlet pushing for Kincardine council to use property taxes to fund the project, as though the expensive additions to the Davidson Centre aren’t enough. They say that it won’t cost ratepayers. I don’t believe it’s possible to build something like that without substantial costs to the municipality in the future. Do ratepayers in Kincardine really want their taxes to go up to fund a rehab centre when there is already a physiotherapy centre at the hospital and near the cemetery? My bet is, they don’t.

That particular media outlet forgets that smaller, surrounding municipalities help pay for doctor recruitment, as well as other medical related items in Kincardine. Are they going to expect Huron-Kinloss and others to help foot the costs that will come with the new centre?

Presently, on the side of ratepayers, council made a good decision. On the other hand, if a sound business plan is presented in the future that will ensure ratepayers aren’t footing the bill, council may be wise to take another look.

Until then, it’s time to put the issue to bed.

I think the ratepayers in Kincardine should keep their eyes on Station Beach. Now that all that money has been spent on the “Blue Flag,” they had best make sure the beach is looked after for a change.

In the past, Station Beach has been mismanaged and wilfully destroyed. Mind you, if the grossly polluted beaches in Toronto can get a Blue Flag, how much of an honour is it to get one? Obviously, anyone who ponies up the cash can fly a Blue Flag. (As much as they deserve recognition for their environmental efforts, I’m glad Huron-Kinloss decided to save it’s money and not bother with it.)

Kincardine council made a good move not screening the beach this year. They made a good move enlisting the help of Geoff Peach of the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation as well. Peach will help them tremendously.

It’s looking like this council in Kincardine is on the right track.
